Summit Four Year-Old Program

The Summit Four-Year-Old Program focuses on building a strong foundation for future academic success. Certified teachers introduce students to academic skills and provide them with opportunities to practice listening, learning, working, playing, and cooperating in small groups.

Due to a wide range of abilities at four years of age, the Summit Four-Year-Old Program is flexible. Students participate in age appropriate, hands-on

activities that utilize multiple senses. Our small class sizes enable us to expose children to both basic and academically challenging concepts, depending on learner needs. Students go to music everyday. Singing and movement are an important part of instruction in the classroom too. Every Tuesday students attend Chapel where they hear Bible stories and learn about the character of God. Chapel instruction is reinforced in the classroom throughout the week.

The Summit Four-Year-Old Curriculum includes the following concepts:
      

Language and Literacy Concepts:
    Listening to stories for information and for fun
    Responding to questions and expressing ideas in a group setting
    Concepts about print (e.g. left to right and top to bottom progression)
    Naming letters of the alphabet
    Understanding that letters are used to represent spoken sounds
    Knowledge of the sounds represented by letters
    Use of letters to represent words
    Use of small writing tools to print name and to copy letters and numbers


Math Concepts:
    Sorting and matching
    Comparing attributes
    Spatial relationships
    Counting objects
    Shape recognition
    Graphing
    Numeral recognition
    Patterning and predicting
    Measurement
    Addition and subtraction with real objects
        
      
Science, Social Studies, and Other Concepts Introduced:  
             Recognizing and describing seasonal and weather changes
    Categorizing and describing animals, plants and machines
    Recognizing patterns and cycles in nature
    Common practices for good health and safety
    Awareness of traditions associated with holidays and celebrations
    Cooperation in joint activities and in following rules
    Participation in class activities and jobs
    Respecting others and building relationships
    Creative expression
    Body awareness and movement
    Enjoyment of music
    Bible stories and knowledge of God’s love for us
